How to Choose a Geotechnical Engineer in Christchurch

What does a geotechnical engineer do?
A geotechnical engineer assesses ground conditions and designs foundations that safely support buildings. In Christchurch, this typically involves:
- Site visits and soil testing (Scala penetrometer, hand auger boring)
- Assessing ground bearing capacity and liquefaction risk
- Designing appropriate foundations – strip footings, raft slabs, deep piles, or ground improvement
- Preparing geotechnical reports for building consent
- Providing foundation recommendations to structural engineers
The work bridges geology and structural engineering. A good geotechnical engineer needs to understand both what the ground is doing and how a building will interact with it.

1. Canterbury experience
Ask how much work they’ve done in Christchurch and Canterbury specifically. An engineer who’s familiar with local soil profiles – the Riccarton gravels, the peat layers in the eastern suburbs, the alluvial fans on the Port Hills – will produce more reliable recommendations.
2. Council-accepted reports
Make sure their reports are accepted by Christchurch City Council (and Selwyn, Waimakariri, or whichever district you’re building in). Some council planning teams are particular about format and content. A geotechnical engineer who knows what each council expects will save you consent delays.
3. Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or equivalent
For residential geotechnical work in New Zealand, your engineer should be either a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or work under the supervision of one.
